SUMMARY:CANCELED “Building on Culture and Community”: Unpacking the Need for Culturally Responsive Services when Supporting Black Women Survivors
DESCRIPTION:THIS SESSION HAS BEEN CANCELED  \n\n\n\n Join Ujima’s Training and Technical Assistance Manager\, Ayana Wallace Vieux\, for an interactive workshop which will explore strategies and unpack current realities for Black survivors\, that enhance advocate capacity by building from the cultures and community of the survivors they serve.  \n\n\n\nThroughout this workshop\, participants will: \n\n\n\n\nUnpack layered violence and the multitude of ways in which it impacts Black women.\n\n\n\nDelve into modern day experiences of Black survivors seeking domestic violence resources.\n\n\n\nExplore the ways in which a trauma-informed\, person-centered\, and culturally responsive approach best supports survivors.\n\n\n\n\nAbout our speaker: \n\n\n\nAyana Wallace Vieux\, MS\, is a Training and Technical Assistance Manager with Ujima\, The National Center on Violence Against Women in the Black Community. Ayana’s career began as a client case coordinator providing direct services and support to victim-survivors who sought emergency shelter. Ayana has been instrumental in the national implementation of the Lethality Assessment Program—Maryland Model (LAP) and has served as the lead trainer for the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence\, the state coalition. Ayana has worked for over a decade in the domestic violence field providing both direct service to survivors and technical assistance to advocates\, law enforcement\, community-based partners\, and faith communities.

The training will also briefly include important tools for advocates serving survivors and tips for enhanced safety planning. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER: \n\n\n\nKatharina Dechert is the Houston Policy & Advocacy Manager at the Tahirih Justice Center. Katharina leads the advancement of Tahirih’s Houston and Texas advocacy campaigns to change the laws and policies that prevent immigrant survivors from accessing safety and justice.
