SUMMARY:Community Meeting: Firearms & Survivor Safety – The Questions We Don't Always Ask
DESCRIPTION:How often are we talking with survivors about firearms? Join HCDVCC for a conversation about firearm risk\, survivor safety\, safe storage\, and opportunities for intervention. Together\, we’ll explore what research\, practice\, and prevention efforts can teach us about navigating these important conversations in a survivor-centered way. \n\n\n\nOrganizations in attendance will also have the opportunity to receive free gun safes\, provided by former council member Abbie Kamin\, to distribute to survivors as appropriate as part of safety planning efforts. \n\n\n\nSpeakers \n\n\n\nAlicia Nuzzie is Director of the Domestic Violence High Risk Team (DVHRT) Initiative at HCDVCC. With more than 25 years of experience in the domestic violence field\, Alicia has dedicated her career to strengthening services for survivors\, advancing policy change\, and improving community responses to violence. She has developed and managed two DVHRTs and is recognized nationally for her work in intimate partner violence homicide prevention. Under her leadership\, the Harris County DVHRT received the 2022 Purple Ribbon Award for Best Urban Initiative of the Year. \n\n\n\nJulie Marinucci is a Houston native\, CPA\, and volunteer leader with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Since 2016\, she has been a champion of the BE SMART program\, a national initiative that promotes secure firearm storage and encourages practical conversations about gun safety to help prevent injury and death among children and families.
