Sometimes I Am Not Myself: Introduction to Traumatic Brain Injury

March is Traumatic Brain Injury Month.

One in four American women will experience severe violence from a domestic partner in their lifetime, often resulting in significant trauma to the head and neck. Over 75% of domestic violence survivors suffer single or repeated traumatic brain injuries, most of which go unreported. (American Brain Foundation)

Harris County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council is hosting a 90 minute virtual class on Traumatic Brain Injury and Domestic Violence in observance of Trauma Brain Injury Month (March) to provide an introduction on traumatic brain injury caused by physical abuse in relationships.

Goal:

Introduction of Traumatic Brain Injury & Domestic Violence Take-Aways for Attendees:

• Be able to define traumatic brain injury.

• Discuss the intersection of TBI and Domestic Violence.

• Discuss strategies to work with survivors who may have Traumatic Brain Injury.

• Identify community resources to assist survivors with Trauma Brain Injury.

Who should attend (beneficial for staff who have less than one year experience working with survivors of domestic violence)?

Resident Advocates – Victim Advocates – Childcare Providers (Shelter) – Social Service Providers – Educators – Public Health Professionals – Legal Advocates
